Cancer blood test hope

Personalised blood tests which could track whether cancer treatment is working or if the disease has come back have been developed by US researchers.

The test identifies tumour DNA “rearrangements” which are specific to the individual patient.

In the future, this “genetic fingerprint” could be used to pick out tiny remnants of a tumour, Science Translational Medicine reports.

Heart patients and swine flu

Following the announcement of a National Flu Service to help relieve pressure on the nation’s health services, Judy O’Sullivan, cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “There is no evidence that people with heart disease are more likely to catch swine flu than the rest of the population. However, once they’ve got it, their risk of having an acute cardiac event may be increased”.
